  • December 13, 2018

As home of The Stampede, Calgary is known for its rodeos! Cowboys come from around the world to compete in Calgary at events all year round. But what if there was a rodeo that wasn’t so much about riding bulls as it was… theatre? Visit Calgary January 9 to 27 to experience the…

HIGH PERFORMANCE RODEO

At first glance you might think that High Performance Rodeo is full of bucks, broncos, bulls and cowpokes – but guess again! Hiding behind a deliberately cheeky name, High Performance Rodeo is Calgary’s premier winter International Arts Festival! Organized by theatre company One Yellow Rabbit, this is nearly an entire month of daring theatre, dance and art performances!

This year’s line-up features dozens of plays from some of the world’s most provocative artists, as well as performances by

Shane Koyczan: One of the world’ best slam poets, Shane Koyczan transforms spoken word poetry into high energy art! Koyczan performed at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Olympics, has a video for TED that has over 3 million views, and has captivated tens of thousands of instant fans over the years. His work is funny, profound and potentially life-changing.

Bruce McCulloch and Cathy Jones: As members of troupes and cast members of two of the most influential comedy shows in Canadian history, Bruce McCulloch of Kids in The Hall and Cathy Jones of This Hour Has 22 Minutes are both titans! On January 26 they’ll be sharing the stage sharing anecdotes about their time in the limelight and what it’s like working in some of the most important comedy shows of the 20th Century!

And that’s not to mention the dozens of rising artists with hungry visions that you’ll be able to catch! If you love provocative art you won’t want to miss this!
While in Calgary, stay at the Days Inn Calgary North Balzac. We’re conveniently located in the heart of Calgary, offering you a great base camp for all your theatre adventures at High Performance Rodeo’s multiple venues!
